And So It Begins

As night was starting to fall, we came upon the gates of Winterhaven being slowly drawn shut by the guards.  We drew closer, hoping to gain entry before they were fully shut, but the guards delayed us with questions as to our purpose in Winterhaven.
Having received a missive from Sister Marla of the Church of Pelor, we announced our intent to rid Winterhaven of the demonic cult’s presence.  The guards however were unaware of any demonic presence, or even of the identity of Marla, and seemed to be acting normally otherwise – we were travelling out late at night, approaching the city as their gates were closing.  Any guard would be wary of such a party.  Others in the party were much more suspicious, and continued asking questions certain that the town had been possessed by demons.  After everyone was convinced that we wouldn’t find out any more, the guards allowed us into town and suggested an inn which allowed travelers to stay the night.
We headed to the inn, as suggested, and found a friendly atmosphere and full bar.  There we learned that the bartender and owner, Sylvanna Wrafton, knew very little as well about demons, cults, and the church of Pelor in general.  The closest, she informed us, was several days to the east – and hasn’t sent travelers in some time.  Sylvanna was also able to tell us that the lord of Winterhaven was Padraig, and had been since his father died.  Lord Padraig was well thought of, an honest and noble liegelord.  We asked about his whereabouts, but Sylvanna did not know for sure – at this time of night he could be found in the bar, on patrol, or at home.  He had a distinguishing scar, so we would know him when we found him.  We then decided it would be best to question everybody in the bar, to see if we could determine more of the nature of Winterhaven.
From the other patrons we learned much – Kobolds had been known to attack strangers, and word of a reward was on everyone’s lips.  Lord Padraig was keen on exterminating this threat.  Valthran the Wise, the town Scribe, thought the stronghold was to the south, but didn’t know for sure.  We also learned that Douven Staul, Valthran’s friend had been missing after speaking of a dragon’s burial site off to the northeast.  Douven’s place was southwest of town, and we decided we would check there for clues to ascertain his whereabouts.
The other patrons in the bar did not have too much information – Delfina and Vespin, an Elf and Human knew of Pelor and as Vespin was from Ironmill she knew the head of the Church of Pelor there was Fire Pippin, but was unable to give us any more information.  Delfina lives outside the walls of Winterhaven and grows flowers, but she had no further information.  Neenarn, an elven hunter and trapper, was even less giving of information – in fact she was cold towards the entire party, enjoying her solitude.  She may have been bitter as our Orc party member was unable to contain his excitement at seeing a single female, and repeatedly hit on her.
Without any other leads on the cult, we decided to visit Lord Padraig.  He informed us of the Kobold problem, which we already knew of due to our previous soirĂ©e with a small party of them earlier in the day.  Lord Padraig was extremely helpful, and enlightened us on the nature of his reward – 200 Gold Pieces for bringing him the head of Irontooth, the Kobold’s leader.  This was not enough for my new friend Alok, who promptly renegotiated us a raise – double the gold!  The Kobolds were a seasonal menace, but one which had grown quite large in the current year.  Lord Padraig also verified that Douven Staul had been missing for several days We agreed to search out the Kobold stronghold and kill Irontooth for Padraig, and prepared for our journey.  It was suggested we stop by Barwens, Thed the Blacksmith, or the Sunday market for equipment and goods, but as we were tired we did not do this, and went to have a good night’s rest in the inn.
In the morning, we went to find the Kobolds, weary of Winterhaven and ready to embark on our adventure again.  On our way to their stronghold, the path was blockaded by a structure, and we were under attack!
